I had a collection of about 400 CDs in FLAC format on an old PC that was taking up space and making noise. I looked around for a replacement and found the Vortexbox. It was one of the most painless setups of this kind of hardware I have experienced in a long time. Unpack, plug in, turn on and done. Both my PCs (one XP desktop, one Vista laptop) and both Squeezeboxes recognized the box immediately and minutes later I was copying my music to the Vortexbox. I am also using it for storage of videos, photos and documents. It converted all my FLACs to MP3s for me, I pointed iTunes at it so I can easily transfer my music to my iPod and iPhone. Lastly, I plugged in a USB hard drive and used the Web GUI to start a backup of all this data.
So far I am very impressed with this device and the software. It can be operated from any PC (or Mac I presume) by using the Web GUI and file drag & drop.
It runs Linux so for those who are savvy, you can log in using a terminal program and tinker away. I wrote some scripts to organize files, manage tags, album art, etc.

It also rips CDs fully automatically, just pop one into the drive and it starts the process.

Highly recommended if you are looking for a small and simple to use device for media and data serving. It is on a shelf in the bedroom, inconspicuous and very quiet, the fan is barely audible, certainly doesn't bother us when sleeping.

A top notch device that works very well. It seems to be a good match for the Logitech Squeezebox Touch. If you enjoy working with computers and care to take the time, you can organize and modify file tags to suit your needs. The company is fantastic and its people are super helpful. The online documentation and forums should help with any questions that come up. This is the perfect system for a computer audio enthusiast.

The Vortexbox Appliance works as advertised - plain and simple. The "appliance" requires about 5 minutes to set up and is very simple to use. It's quiet and appears very well made. It is the perfect companion to my Logitech Transporter. Really not much more to add. Compared to similarly priced NAS devices the Vortexbox is a no brainer.
